Winners of ‘pot mum’ contest scoop CASH PRIZES for school
The green-fingered winners of a ‘grow a pot chrysanthemum’ contest have scooped major prizes for themselves and their school.

Budding growers Joshua Bonney and his sister Lily-Rose Bonney were both surprised and delighted to find that they had come first and second in the annual primary schools’ competition organised by West Sussex Growers’ Association (WSGA) www.wsga.org.uk The youngsters won a £50 and £25 book token respectively and they netted a total of £750 for their school – North Mundham Primary near Chichester (the £500 first prize and a £250 second prize).

The brother and sister were among 1,600 pupils from West Sussex primary schools who were invited to grow a ‘pot ‘mum’ in this WSGA competition which is now in its 13th year. The children used a cutting supplied by Yoder Toddington of Littlehampton, with compost and pots donated by Fargro Ltd, also of Littlehampton. A professional grower judged the duo’s plants to be the best grown – a good shape with plenty of blooms and buds.

Dr Paul Sopp, of WSGA, said: “West Sussex Growers’ Association are delighted with the quality of the plants that were grown. The idea behind the ‘pot mum’ competition is to introduce young people to horticulture in the hope that some will pursue it as a serious interest or even a career. Unusually, both the winner, Joshua, and second-placed competitor, his sister Lily-Rose, came from the same school. They must come from a green-fingered family and we hope that they will provide inspiration for other young growers!

The award to the children and their school was presented by WSGA member and leading UK chrysanthemum grower Colin Frampton, of Donaldsons, Chichester. Third prize went to Owen White of ElmGrovePrimary School, Littlehampton. NorthMundhamPrimary School also gave its own highly commended awards to two pupils:- Grace Bolland and Abbie Vollebregt.
